How to Upload a Personal Webpage

Return to Support page

When you sign up for Internet service, you receive 2MB of free webspace for putting up a personal webpage. In order to upload any pages you have created, you must use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. You can download an FTP client by visiting www.download.com and searching for "FTP client."

Once you have downloaded the client of your choice, there is some basic information you will need to enter. These settings are common to most FTP clients, so no matter what client you are using, you will need this information.

The following instructions are for setting up WS_FTP (an FTP client):

1. On the Connection window, go to File | New Site

2. Type in a name for your site (can be anything).

3. Type in the host name or ip address. Our ftp host is ftp.kci.net.

4. Click Finish.

5. You will now need to enter your userid and password, which would be your KCI username and password.

6. Click Save, then click Connect.

Once you have connected successfully, you will logged into your webspace. There, you need to create a folder named "public_html". You will put all of your webpage files/folders in this folder. If you do not create this folder, no one will be able to view your webpage.

Also, be sure that your homepage is named "index.htm". If you name your homepage anything else, your webpage will not view properly.

Once your webpage is uploaded, it's address will be in the following format: http://users.kci.net/username/

If you wish to have your own .com address, please visit http://webhosting.kci.net for details on what you need to do.
